This series consists of letters received and copies of letters sent by the superintendent of the Pipestone Indian School. For the period 1909-1911 the series consists entirely of letters received; beginning with 1912 copies of letters sent are included in the series. The correspondence relates to the administration of the Birch Cooley Day School, an independent Indian school in Morton, Minnesota, and the supervision of non-reservation Indians living in the Morton, Minnesota area. Subjects related to the school function include student enrollment and attendance, courses of study and educational policy, general school administration and staffing, student health and welfare, building construction and maintenance ,and procurement of supplies and open market purchases. Subjects relating to non-reservation Indians primarily include land allotments and issue of substance rations and enforcement of liquor laws within the surrounding communities.

Established in 1893, the Pipestone Indian School was built on land taken from the Yankton reservation at the Pipestone Quarry. The Yankton people long contested that loss and won before the Supreme Court in 1926. In 1894 the formation of the Pipestone Indian Training School was authorized on the uninhabited Yankton Pipestone reservation.
